UK Student Visa Credibility Interview Questions
Before a UK university issues your CAS — and sometimes again at the UKVI stage — you face a credibility interview testing one thing: are you a genuine student. Interviewers are trained to spot agent-scripted answers, so the winning strategy is unglamorous: actually know your course, your money and your plan, and talk about them in your own words. Most refusals cite vague course knowledge or inconsistent funding, not weak English.

Q1Why did you choose this course, and what modules will you study?
What they're checking: The single biggest credibility test. Genuine students know their modules; coached applicants know the university ranking.
A strong answer: Name three or four actual modules from the course page and connect one to your background or goal: "The Applied Machine Learning module is the reason I picked Leeds over Sheffield — my final-year project was in exactly this area."
Q2Why the UK, and why not your home country or another destination?
What they're checking: A reasoned comparison versus a migration default.
A strong answer: Be concrete about the academic difference: one-year master’s duration, course content that does not exist at home, accreditation your target employers recognise. Comparing specific alternatives you rejected ("I also held an offer from an Australian university, but…") reads as genuine research.
Q3How are you funding your studies, and what is the total cost?
What they're checking: Whether the money is real, legitimate and understood. Inconsistency with your bank documents here is fatal.
A strong answer: Total tuition, living costs by city, and the exact split — savings, sponsor, loan — recalled without hesitation. Know the 28-day bank balance rule and where your funds have been sitting.
Q4What do you know about where you will live, and the cost of living there?
What they're checking: Practical preparation — genuine students have looked this up; coached ones have not.
A strong answer: Name the accommodation option you are considering and a realistic monthly figure for that city. "University halls are about £160 a week, but I’m also looking at shared housing in Headingley which is cheaper" is exactly the texture they want.
Q5What are your plans after the course?
What they're checking: A coherent career story. Unlike the US interview, mentioning the Graduate Route is fine — pretending you have never heard of it looks worse.
A strong answer: A specific role and sector, with the course as the bridge: "Data engineering roles in India’s fintech sector — possibly a year or two of UK experience on the Graduate Route first, since employers at home value it." Honest, planned, employment-focused.
Q6Have you used an education agent, and who filled in your application?
What they're checking: Honesty, and whether you own your application or an agent does.
A strong answer: If you used an agent, say so — that is normal and allowed. What matters is demonstrating the decisions were yours: you chose the course, you know the contents, you understand the finances.
Q7Explain the gap in your education or employment history.
What they're checking: Whether time since your last qualification has a purposeful story. Unexplained gaps are a standard refusal reason.
A strong answer: Account for the time with specifics — work, certifications, family responsibilities, exam preparation — and connect it forward: what happened in the gap should make the course choice more logical, not less.
Q8You have studied a different field before. Why are you switching now?
What they're checking: Career-changer logic — a favourite probing area because weak answers unravel fast.
A strong answer: A trigger, a bridge and a destination: what exposed you to the new field, what you have already done about it (courses, projects, work), and the role the switch leads to. "I discovered analytics in my commerce final year, completed two Google certificates, and this MSc formalises it" holds together.
